Tired of buying expensive butter full of additives? You can make your own creamy, delicious butter at home in just 5 minutes – and it’s so easy, you’ll never look back! All you need is fresh heavy cream and a simple blender or stand mixer.
Why Homemade Butter is Better
✅ Pure, fresh, and free from preservatives
✅ Cheaper than store-bought butter
✅ Tastes richer and more natural
✅ You get homemade buttermilk as a bonus!
What You’ll Need
- 2 liters (about 8 cups) of fresh heavy cream (35-40% fat) – this yields about 1 kg of butter
- A blender, stand mixer, or hand mixer
- A bowl of ice water (for rinsing the butter)
- Optional: pinch of salt for salted butter
How to Make Butter in 5 Minutes
- Pour Cream into Blender/Mixer
Add all the cream to your blender or stand mixer bowl. - Whip Until It Separates
Blend or whip on high speed. First, it’ll turn into whipped cream. Keep going until it separates into yellow butter solids and white buttermilk (about 3–5 minutes). - Strain and Press
Pour the contents through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to separate the butter from the liquid (buttermilk). Save the buttermilk for pancakes or baking! - Rinse the Butter
Place the butter in a bowl of ice water. Knead it with your hands or a spatula until the water runs clear, changing the water if needed. This step removes leftover buttermilk so the butter lasts longer. - Add Salt (Optional)
Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and knead it in if you like salted butter. - Shape and Store
Shape your butter into a block or roll. Wrap tightly in parchment or store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Bonus Tip:
Homemade butter keeps for up to 2 weeks in the fridge or up to 6 months in the freezer!
